We're nearing the two year anniversary of our mini-break to Cancun (even though it feels like it was just yesterday that we were there). As we suffer through another wonderful winter, what better time is there to relive warmer times in Mexico?
We didn't intend to go back to World Cafe for our second lunch at Dreams Cancun. We originally thought we would go to the cafe on the beach, bask in the sunlight and have a wonderful lunch. The day began cloudy, cool and windy, but our plans didn't change. Until lunchtime brought torrential downpours. World Cafe was much closer to our room and indoors. We showed up for lunch completely drenched, and we weren't even sure the beachside cafe would be open in such a storm.
Just like our first lunch, the food was just okay. It was a little too salty but there was plenty of variety. It was also good to see that they had different food each day.
For my first plate, I got beak cock salad (no idea what this name refers to; it had jicama and carrots), beet salad, seasoned potatoes, tuna salad, chicken fajita, lemon style fish, and campesinos vegetables (zucchini, corn, onions and mushrooms).
A got most of the same things but also got a meat stew and some eggplant.
It's been so long and our memories are not as fresh as they were when we first recapped the trip upon our return, but we don't remember being thrilled by any particular item. I only know which items I liked best by what I got seconds of - beak cock salad, the lemon fish, and campesinos vegetables. The buffet was fine but not very exciting. It was just a nice dry place to eat as it poured outside.
Since we were waiting out the storm, we decided to get strawberry margaritas (which came out like daiquiris). They were okay, just very sweet and not much alcohol (unsurprising).
We kept snacking through the rain, and unfortunately tried some other stuff that really wasn't very good. The chips were boring and not very crisp and the fish stick ("fish finger") was nothing special. Moving on to something sweet for dessert, we decided to try these little boxes of jelly. One was orange or peach flavored, and the other had two different flavors (unclear what exactly they were). Neither was very good. It's hard to pinpoint what was bad about them. Maybe they used an artificial sweetener instead of real sugar, but they tasted somewhat like chemicals.
To wash that taste out of our mouths and to have a better dessert, we decided to go for ice cream. We got one bowl with strawberry and chocolate and another with coconut and mango. They were so much better than those jelly boxes.
