Toscano Panini

One of our favorite spots in Hell's Kitchen is Don Antonio by Starita, which we wrote about before when recapping our World Cup eats exploration. The one thing we had never tried at Don Antonio until our most recent visit is their panini, since they are only served at lunch, and we had always gone for dinner.

This time, we tried the Toscano panini ($9), which had Italian baked ham, homemade mozzarella (their homemade mozzarella is so amazing), tomato sauce, mushrooms, pecorino romano, and extra virgin olive oil. We figured it would be a good match for our usual favorite pizza, the Montanara Starita, with its delicious tomato sauce and smoked mozzarella.

The panini was much larger than we thought it would be. The bread was soft with just a little bit of crispness, and the flavors were nice and rich. Ham and cheese is always a good match and this was done well. The tomato sauce is usually the star of the show for the pizza, and it's very much a standout here as well since it's the same sauce, as far as we could tell. The cheese oozed out of the panini and helped contribute to the (good) messy nature of the sandwich.

In the end, the Montanara Starita pizza was still the best thing on the table at lunch, but I'm not sure it will ever not be our favorite thing to eat at Don Antonio. It's just that good.
