Corned Beef and Cabbage

We're not even close to St. Patrick's Day yet, but today our Trader Joe's was giving out samples of corned beef and cabbage. I had read some mixed reviews of their new uncured sliced corned beef ($4.99 for 8 ounces), but we definitely wanted to give it a try.

Overall, we weren't that impressed. According to the TJ's site, the corned beef is "intensely flavored meat" that is seasoned with lots of spices and seasonings, including garlic, onion, cloves, coriander, dill, allspice, and pepper, and then treated with salt, vinegar, celery powder, and cherry powder. We didn't really get those flavors when we tried it. We would agree that this was definitely less salty than most corned beef (it's often too salty for me), but we didn't catch those nuances of flavor at all in the corned beef sample. A even remarked that the whole thing seemed bland and flavorless, which was disappointing as he loves corned beef (and corned beef and cabbage). Perhaps the flavor is better trying it on its own, but the meat certainly didn't shine in this sample. It was mostly just a muted meat flavor.

Buy? Most likely not, unless they run another sample where it has a stronger corned beef flavor and we enjoy it. (Yes, for the shredded green cabbage though, as it's my favorite cabbage for slaw.)
